Vermicompost is fully organic and rich in microbes, shown to enhance plant growth, improve soil aeration and moisture retention, while also protecting plants from pests and diseases.
The joint venture will see selected food waste streams supplied as a substrate for the Wormganix bioconversion process, with the intention for the company to eventually establish a vermicomposting facility at MYGroup’s The Maltings organics processing site in South Milford, near Leeds.
Worm bioconversion will further enhance MYGroup’s bio-organic recovery capabilities, complementing the company’s existing Insectology™ operation, which utilises black soldier fly (BSF) larvae to break down food and other organic waste through insect bioconversion.
MYGroup’s bio-organic waste management offering enables the company to optimise landfill diversion, reducing the associated greenhouse gas emissions and carbon burden of waste disposal, while also closing the loop on food and other organic waste through the transformation of the matter into valuable byproducts. With the UK Government moving to phase out the sale of peat-based composts in retail and professional horticulture, demand for credible, sustainable alternatives is accelerating. Wormganix vermicompost as a planet-friendly alternative is already in use by retail and commercial customers, as well as being tested in large-scale trials with businesses and the Royal Horticultural Society.
Worm bioconversion adds another powerful tool to our waste recovery capabilities. By working with Wormganix, we can help turn food waste into a high value, living compost that actively supports soil health and biodiversity. This joint venture consequently aligns perfectly with MYGroup’s commitment to circular, regenerative models of waste management, where outputs become inputs for new value chains and nothing is disposable.
Steve Carrie, Group Director, MYGroup
This joint venture will finally prove the scalability of our method of bioconversion. We can create real value from waste streams by creating compost, fertiliser and soil amendments for both retail and commercial horticulture – the “key to the door” being provided by MYGroup and its forward-thinking organics recycling approach.
Andrew Varley, Owner and Director, Wormganix
